My mind wanted to be here but, my body was still adjusting.
We had just picked up a six pack of beer but, it didn't look like Slate was taking me back home.
While they never said I am sure I was going to Slate's dad's house in the suburbs of Jersey. I was thankful that Darcy and Slate had pulled me out but, I wasn't sure if I could be social.
I was freaking out but I was sure the Bennetts were a nice family-- I had been told Slate was a fluke.
I looked out the window and noticed we just left the state
“Where the hell are we going ?” Darcy asked and then I realized we were in New York
* * *
The house in Wassiac was in a neighborhood lined with perfectly small one story homes. Everyone had their blinds open to scenes of familial tranquility and the lots driveways were filled with SUVs. and the weather only got colder. We pulled into one of the driveways and Nick came
out of the house before we could get out
“What are you doing here ?” he asked. His face glowing at seeing us all. He seemed back to the usual Nick with this peace around him.“I guess we have enough leftovers for you guys--
“We aren’t dealing with your catholic bullshit get in the car,” Slate said.
“Okay let me just—“
Darcy opened the car door and pulled him into the backseat.
"What are you doing ?" Nick laughed
"I don't know but, it's more fun when you force people," Darcy said," You can pretend like you're kidnappers."
“Where are we going ?” I finally
asked as Slate pulled back on to the highway again.
“Slate, you should know if you’re going to kill us you should start with Nick and I," Darcy said "Because you’ll need Elias’s help to carry the bodies,”
“Noted but, I’m not killng you unless I have to. You idiots are friends and if you don’t make up, I’m going to drive this car off the highway.”
“All threats aside,” Nick said,”How was your dad, Eli ?”
I was a little taken a back by his abruptness but, told him about my experience and he took it in quietly.
"So you didn't tell him you were his son ?" he asked
" I didn't think it matters. They gave me up for a reason. I admit I'm scared but atleast I'm not going into this disease blind."
“I was wrong Elias," Nick said " I've realized I shouldn't tell you how to deal with your family"
"And I shouldn't tell you," I said
"No, you may have been right. Mother is going to stay with Killan and he'll take care of the house while I concentrate more on school and bills and getting a scholarship for next semester. And maybe even getting a social life"
"Social life, did you meet someone ?" Darcy inquired
"Maybe," Nick said
"Nick I'm sorry it didn't work out how you--"
"We are here," Slate interrupted me
I looked up. We were at the most popular place in the United States today.
Meadowlands Stadium.
“Darcy said he wanted to watch the game so lets do it,”
"Oh my god, you have tickets ?" Nick asked
"No," Slate said driving the car around the back and through a cleared path until he finally stopped in a clearing that looked right above and into the stadium. Slate got out of the car and walked outside.
"This is pretty decent, right ?" he said pulling the six pack our from under his seat.
“You can’t even see the Jet girls
from here,” Darcy whined getting out of the car and sitting on the hood.
“That does kind of suck," he admitted, sitting next to Darcy on the hood "Hey, wouldn't Sadie look hot dressed as one ?"
“Ew, man she’s like our sister besides you
have Emily,” Darcy told him
“I don’t have Emily," Slate said "Nobody has her, anyone crazy enough can take her,”
“She seems really nice.” I said under my breath taking a seat next to Darcy.
“It’s always the quiet ones,” Darcy joked
“So, wait," said Nick crawling past us on the hood of the car and sitting on top of the car "I thought the team was the
New York Giants ?"
"Are you for real ?" Slate asked
"This is crazy, Slate" Darcy said through a smile," I love you, man"
"Yeah, but I'm freezing my ass off !" Nick commented
It was freezing ice cold and we were situated on top of the car pretending we could see the game but really we were just talking over a few beers.
One of us shouldn’t be drinking
One of us shouldn’t be outside
One of us shouldn’t be here
One of us will probably forget this.
None of us where supposed to be
sick and no one could tell us why it happened to us.
But we were here and this was the best way to deal with it.
Together.
